NAILS, MANICURE & PEDICURE SAFETY
Manicuring and pedicuring is all about nail treatments, filing, polishing and applying artificial nails.Proper handling and usage of nail products are critical to minimise health and safety risks. Here are some recommended practices to ensure optimal health and safety for all.
MINIMISE INHALATION
While nail products are the fundamentals to creating beautiful nails, the strong, harmful fumes that they emit create quite the opposite effect when inhaled. These fumes could bring about serious health and safety problems.
MINIMISE SKIN EXPOSURE
MINIMISE SKIN EXPOSURE
Nail products usually contain strong chemicals. As such, it could be harsh on the skin. On top of that, chemical exposure to skin might also lead to accidental ingestion or inhalation. Therefore, steps must be taken to minimise overexposure of chemicals on skin.
AVOID ACCIDENTAL INGESTION
Refrain from eating and drinking at time of manicure or pedicure. At the same time ensure that you wash your hands before consuming food or drinks to prevent accidental ingestion of harmful chemicals.

Foodstuff and nail care products should always be kept separately by having designated storage areas for both, to avoid careless mistakes.
ENSURE ADEQUATE CLEANLINESS
Bacteria, fungi, and viruses can easily breed in unhygienic settings and can be transferred to one another through dirty nail equipment and surfaces.
Always wash your hands before beginning to manicure or pedicure. If there are any signs of infection, unhealthy appearing conditions, or broken/irritated skin, do delay the need to manicure. This is to prevent any worsening, and to avoid spreading of any infection to others.
ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES
Gloves are ideal as they provide the best protection against damage to skin and nails. It is not easily penetrable by chemicals and does protect the skin from absorbing potentially harmful ingredients which may cause skin allergies, irritation, or other related problems.
BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS WITH SOLVENTS
The human skin can easily and quickly absorb certain solvents. Exposure to solvents may damage skin by removing natural oils from the skin and lead to dryness, or irritation that may enable chemicals to easily penetrate the skin abd enter the body. Allergies can occur.
WEAR DUST MASKS
Dust masks prevent direct inhalation of dusts to minimise breathing in of any foreign particles. Be sure to identify the difference between dust masks and surgical masks, as surgical masks are not effective in protecting against dusts or vapours.
THE MSDS – A VITAL GUIDE
An MSDS is an important document that explains the risks, precautions, and response actions related to exposure to a particular hazardous material used as an ingredients in a product. An MSDS also explains the appropriate and best course of action should accidental overexposure occur.
In a family of many women, often all could or would gather for pedicure/manicure, and it will be good to note all of the above against undesirable incidences.
